Introducing Anchoret, a chair that seamlessly blends the art of rattan weaving, the serenity of meditation, and the elegance of Chinese tea culture. Designed by Zhenyi Chen, this innovative piece of furniture showcases the beauty of traditional materials and craftsmanship, while offering a functional and visually appealing addition to any space.
The inspiration behind Anchoret stems from three distinct sources. Firstly, the design draws from the rich heritage of rattan weaving, an intangible cultural tradition of Guangdong, China. Secondly, it takes cues from the contemplative practices of Eastern Buddhism. Lastly, it incorporates elements of Chinese tea drinking culture. By combining these three influences, Chen creates a design that is both rooted in tradition and relevant to contemporary lifestyles.
What sets Anchoret apart is its use of environmentally friendly materials such as bamboo and rattan. By utilizing these natural resources, the design not only showcases the unique craftsmanship of local artisans but also provides employment opportunities for them. This fusion of traditional materials and modern design principles not only creates a visually stunning piece but also promotes sustainable practices.
Functionally, Anchoret serves as both a chair and a table, seamlessly merging the two into a harmonious whole. Its proportions are carefully crafted to create a visually pleasing aesthetic, while the combination of materials and finishes ensures an excellent user experience. Whether it's for resting, meditating, enjoying a cup of tea, or reading a book, Anchoret offers multiple functions in one elegant design.
The realization of Anchoret involves the intricate rattan weaving techniques found in Southeast Asia. Skilled craftsmen specialize in working with bamboo and rattan, expertly bending and weaving them together with solid wood. Through this process, the design redefines the value of traditional materials and handicraft, breathing new life into age-old techniques.
With dimensions of 1500mmx750mmx640mm, Anchoret is suitable for a variety of indoor spaces, including clubs and homes. Its versatility and ability to seamlessly blend into different environments make it a standout piece in any setting.
The creation of Anchoret began in December 2019 and was completed in June 2020 in Guangdong, China. Throughout the design process, extensive research was conducted on traditional weaving crafts, existing products, and contemporary lifestyles. This thorough investigation, combined with modern design methods, resulted in the realization of this unique chair.
Overcoming the challenges of combining design and craftsmanship was a crucial aspect of Anchoret's creation. Effective communication with the artisans was essential, particularly when it came to the delicate integration of rattan and wood. Through collaboration and a deep understanding of the materials and techniques involved, Chen successfully navigated these challenges, resulting in a design that seamlessly marries form and function.
Anchoret has garnered recognition in the design world and was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category in 2021. This prestigious accolade is a testament to the chair's well-designed, practical, and innovative qualities, meeting professional and industrial requirements. Anchoret's integration of industry best practices and competent technical characteristics contribute to a better world.
With Anchoret, Zhenyi Chen has created a chair that not only showcases the beauty of traditional craftsmanship but also embodies the spirit of cultural heritage and contemporary design. By seamlessly blending form and function, this unique piece of furniture invites users to experience the tranquility of meditation and the elegance of tea culture, all while appreciating the artistry of rattan weaving.
